1996 - Supreme Euthanasia

Early 96.
"Supreme Euthanasia" ("eu" means "good" ; "thanatos" means "death") was the first name for the album All Eyez on Me. 2Pac thought about this title when he was still in jail. But the project was then a compilation of unreleased tracks like "R U Still Down", "When I Get Free" and especially "Amerikka Eatz Its Young". At the time of his third solo when he recorded these songs, he was thinking about "Amerikaz Crucify" as a title for his album but also already about "Youthanasia Amerika". This last title eventually changed to "Supreme Euthanasia". It was a title for a dark album, like was Me Against The World. But it was less adequate for his first album on Death Row, with a more west coast g-funk oriented sound. So 2Pac dropped again this title for "When I Get Free" and then for "All Eyez on Me".

In beginning of 96, after having recorded All Eyez on Me and many tracks for a Thug Life Volume 2 album with the Outlaw Immortalz, 2Pac started to record new songs for a new album. 2Pac tend to use more live instrumentation in his records. With the tone of some of the new tracks, like "This Ain't Livin'", "Ballad of The Dead Soulja", "Wordz 2 My First Born", but also "When We Ride on Our Enemies", "My Lil' Homies", 2Pac appears darker, sour and nervous. The atmosphere stepped up in the tension. Even the love song like "Tongue Kissing" has a smoked feeling. The title of "Supreme Euthanasia" was welcome this time.

The tracks gathered here have been recorded between february and april 96. Almost all the songs were produced by Johnny J except two. Almost all the tracks had a live instrumentation feeling.

DETAILED TRACKLIST

01. Don't Go 2 Sleep [version II] feat. Edi & Hussein / Daz
  • 10/13/95 for the first take of this recording (at least the verses and the hook). But the conclusion has been added later (diss towards Chino XL). An "original" version of the song without the diss ending but with Daz instead of Hussein has been released in the unofficial Makaveli & Dillinger Don't Go 2 Sleep EP (1998, DPG).
02. Lil' Homies [version I] feat. Danny Boy & Val Young [chorus] / Johnny J
  •  3/7/96. Remixed for Until The End of Time (2001). Is the 2Pac version the first one or the second one ?
03. Everything They Owe / Johnny J
  • Unknown recording date. Remixed for Until The End of Time (2001).
04. Good Life feat. Big Syke & Edi / Johnny J
  • 3/31/96. Remixed for Until The End of Time (2001).
05. When We Ride On Our Enemies / Johnny J
  • 3/7/96. Remixed for Until The End of Time (2001).
06. U Don't Have 2 Worry feat. Storm, Young Noble, Kastro & Kadafi / QD3
  • 3/7/96. Remixed for Until The End of Time (2001).
07. Ride 4 Me feat. Hussein & Kurupt / Johnny J
  • Unknown recording date. There are versions with one verse or two of Scarlo at the end. Scarlo is also known to have been added to a posthumous version of "Runnin' on E". What is the original version of this song ? what is the best one ? The first verse of Scarlo is good.
08. Give Me Love (Interlude) / Johnny J
  • 2/13/96. Another track with the same title is supposed to have been recorded the 24th of october 95.
09. Too Late Playa feat. MC Hammer, Big Daddy Kane, Nutt-So & Danny Boy [chorus] / Johnny J
  • 3/16/96. In an interview, Big Daddy Kane explains that they recorded this song just the night after the fight between Mike Tyson and Frank Bruno where they all met.
10. Ballad of a Dead Soulja feat. Sixx Feet Deep [chorus] / Johnny J
  • 2/2/96. Fairly remixed in Until The End of Time (2001).
11. This Ain't Livin' / Johnny J
  • 3/14/96. Remixed for Until The End of Time (2001). This song has probably been written for Snoop Dogg (like "Fake Ass Niggaz" for Yanni, "Po' Nigga Blues" for The Govenor, "Unconditional Love" for MC Hammer...), Snoop was actually working on his second album Tha Doggfather (1996, Death Row), but it seems Snoop never recorded it.
12. Wordz To My First Born [version II] feat. Nutt-So (Street Thugs) / DJ Quik
  • 3/8/96. Remixed in Until The End of Time (2001). The first version of the song is a solo version sometimes called "Things Are Changing" because of the chorus. There are two versions of the Nutt-So version : one with singing hook, the second without (published in Nutt-So's Betrayal (1996, Nutty's Playhouse).
13. Just Watchin' feat. Snoop Dogg, Dogg Pound & Charlie Wilson [chorus] / Johnny J
  • 2/26/96. This song was recorded for Snoop's Tha Doggfather (1996, Death Row).
14. Tongue Kissin' (Set It Free) / Johnny J
  • 4/15/96. The music has been given to Jon B for "Are You Still Down" released in his album Cool Relax (1997).
15. Until The End of Time feat. Sixx Feet Deep [chorus] / Johnny J
  • 2/19/96. Remixed for Until The End of Time (2001).
16. Borrowed Times feat. Chelle / Johnny J
  • 4/4/96. 2Pac is only speaking on this track (or telling a poem).
