1993 - Out On Bail Demo (with Thug Life)

Thug Life group are :
- 2Pac & Big Syke
- Rated R and Macadoshis
- Mopreme (from M.M.A.T.W. Mouse Man & The Wicked)
- the producers : Johnny J & Stretch
- Y?N-Vee (the backing singing female group)
- the other friends around : Mouse Man (from MMATW), Yanni (female rapper), Prince Ital Joe (reggae singing on the first song of the group), Majesty (brother of Stretch).

In 92, 2Pac with his stepfather Mutulu Shakur (Mopreme's Father, in jail), alongside with other O.Gs, wrote down a text called the "Thug Life code" (here is a copy) in order to appease the gang war (especially between Crips and Bloods).

In late 92 (maybe when he was with Treach), 2Pac met Big Syke and the Rated R. Big Syke was about to release his first album with Johnny J and the group Evil Mind Gangsta's (1993, TNT). 2Pac & him thought about recording a song around the concept of "Thug Life" that he eventually developed earlier with his first group 2 From The Crew. The name the idea of a group.

So Big Syke and 2Pac recorded a first song called "Thug Life" and then gathered around them their friends to record a first session of Thug Life. But Interscope thought that it was too violent and controversial and almost all of these records have been shelved or re-recorded. It had had many non official releases as "Thug Life (Demo)" or sometimes as "Thug Life 2". The most interesting version appears to be this non officially published version in 1998 with pictures of a cassette showing a handwritten tracklist, and the mention of a first name for the label « In the Bank Ent. », maybe a pre-title for Thug Life’s label "Out Da Gutta".

"Out on Bail" seems to be recognized as a real demo tape that 2Pac purposed to Interscope at the end of 93 for his group Thug Life. But there are other tapes of early Thug Life. In this "Out on Bail". This tape gathers tracks 2Pac and Thug Life recorded in 1993 (except "Holla If Ya Hear Me [original]"). It eventually lacks a first version of "Fake Ass Bitches" (cf. the other Demo Tape at the end of this page). But maybe the song was first planned to be a gift for Yanni.

DETAILED TRACKLIST

1. Out On Bail feat. AB / LG
  • This was the first single planned by 2Pac for the album. 2Pac played it live at the MTV awards on the 5th of January 1994. Maybe it has been written after the october 1993 altercation with the police and the jail time.
2. Runnin’ (From The Police) [version I] feat. Dramacydal, Stretch, Notorious B.I.G. & Buju Banton / Easy Mo Bee
  • This famous combination between Pac & Biggie has many versions. Pac himself made three versions (one for this Demo, then he re-wrote his bars for Thug Life Vol. 1 or Amerikaz Crucify and mixed it with two different reggae chorus) but failed to publish it on album before the N-Y shooting and his clash with Biggie. The second version has been dropped in the compilation One Million Strong (1995, Solar).
3. Judgement Day feat. Dee Tha Mad Bitch (Bo$$), Mopreme & Stretch / Stretch
  • 2Pac's verses have been re-used for the Eminem's title "Soldier Like Me" in Loyal To The Game (2004, Amaru).
4. High Till I Die feat. Rated R & Macadoshis / Johnny J
  • Original collective version of a song that will be re-recorded solo in 1994 and then published on Sunset Park OST in 1995.
5. Straight Ballin’ [original] / Easy Mo Bee
  • Final version on Thug Life : Volume 1 (1994, Interscope).
6. Gettin' Money / Mike Mosley
  • Fairly remixed on R U Still Down (1997).
7. Faced Shoutouts (interlude)
8. Old School [original] / Soulshock
  • Final version released in Me against the world (1995, Interscope).
9. Only Fear of Death [version I] / Live Squad
  • Released without major changes in R U Still Down (1997, Amaru, Interscope). The song has been remixed for Amerikaz Crucify.
10. Thug Life feat. Big Syke & Prince Ital Joe / Johnny J
  • According to Big Syke, this is the first song they recorded as the Thug Life group. He’s rapping on this song with his "soulja" slowed voice).
11. Niggaz in the Pen feat. Mopreme & Mouse Man / Stretch (or Truman Jefferson)
  • It exists a clean remake of the song called "Brothers in the Pen" with a new Pac's verse. 2Pac had probably the intention to use it as a single.
12. Cradle 2 The Grave [original] feat. Mopreme, Rated R, Macadoshis & Big Syke / Professor Jay
  • Released in Papa'z Song single (1994, Interscope). Remixed in Thug Life Vol. 1 (1994).
13. Get My Drank On feat. Y?N-Vee (interlude) / ?
14. Is it Cool 2 Fuck feat. Macadoshis, Rated R & Natasha Walker (Y?N-Vee) / Live Squad
15. Definition of a Thug Nigga (Poetic Justice OST) / Warren G
  • Released without major changes in 1993 in Poetic Justice Soundtrack and in R U Still Down (1997, Amaru). So it could have been recorded in late 92 early 93.
16. Lie to Kick it feat. Richie Rich / Warren G
  • Fairly remixed in R U Still Down (1997, Interscope).
BONUS TRACKS :
17. Holla If Ya Hear Me [original] feat. Live Squad / Live Squad
  • It’s written 1992 in Live Squad’s website. Re-recorded for Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. (1993).
18. Bury Me a G feat. Natasha Walker (Y?N-Vee) [original solo version] / Live Squad
  • Re-recorded with members of Thug Life for Thug Life : Volume 1 (1994, Interscope).
